The final rounds of the summer league stableford competitions will be held on Thursday the 3rd August and Thursday the 10th August. The round cancelled as a result of inclement weather will be played on Thurs 17th August.
…. and the good new is …. even if you have not yet entered, you may still be able to play. We have 2 unexpected cancellations and hence two spare places. If you fancy and your handicap is between 13 and 20+ then contact Tommy Watson for details
Today was Finals Day for the Men’s Club Championship and the Seniors Handicap Trophy at Parklands and the warm dry weather ensured that the golf was of the highest quality with all the finalists putting in very strong performances. The Men’s Club Championship is matchplay played over 36 holes. The final brought together the Men’s Vice Captain, Chris Bowman and Lee Thompson who until a few weeks ago was serving us in the Club shop. There was little time to warm up, with the pair on the tee for a 07.30am start. In the early morning session, Chris carved out a lead and he was 4 up after 18 holes. The second round was a tighter match but Chris extended his lead to win on the 31st hole. It was a great competition, played with superb sporting attitude. Well done to both players; Lee who showed his undoubted potential for the near future and Chris who became Champion after being a member of Parklands since childhood. The Captain, Tess Mann, refereed the match and he finished with a grin like a Cheshire cat, so proud of both players.
The Seniors Handicap Trophy final was matchplay over 18 holes with the full handicap difference applying. The finalists were Geordie Faulder and Dickie Rutherford and with a handicap difference of one shot, they might as well have been playing off scratch. They teed off at 07.38 and the match was close. However by the 14th Dickie had opened up a 3 shot lead, which by the 17th had been pulled back to zero. So it was all down to the last hole and a shot into the bunker for Geordie and a well struck put from Dickie became the deciding factors. Mr Rutherford won 1 up. Well done to both of you for a closely fought competition.
Don’t forget the next round of the Men’s Summer league is scheduled for tomorrow(Wednesday).
The usual arrangements apply let us hope the weather is friendly.
The finals of the Ladies Club and Bronze Championships were played at Parklands on Saturday, 8th July. The Ladies final was between Niamh Lendrum and Candy Brown. Niamh played well and successfully retained the Club Championship trophy. In the final of the Bronze Championship, Maureen Jenkins beat Lynn Taylor. The photograph shows the finalists receiving their trophies.
Next Sunday morning will see the Final of the Men’s Club Championship, played over 36 holes between Chris Bowman and Lee Thompson with the first 18 holes starting at 7.30am. This will be closely followed at 7.38am with the final of the Seniors Handicap Trophy played over 18 holes.
There will then be a Captains sweep, but please be aware that the tees are only booked until 10.00am so don’t turn up late expecting a game.
Another reason to turn up early is that the entry sheet for Captain’s Day 2017 will be put out this coming Sunday, so remember that the early bird catches the worm! Our Captain, Tess Mann’s big day is on Sunday, 6th August and this is the grandest event in our golfing season at Parklands. So get your name down for his special day.
If you won a voucher or other prize on President’s Day, this coming Sunday would be a good day to come and collect because the President will be starting the morning matches and will be at the Club most of the day.
My thanks go to the 134 members of Parklands who supported me by playing in my first President’s Day. Fine weather and a really friendly attitude from all concerned made this a special day for me. The odd comment about my tartan trews did not detract from the occasion. Many thanks to all who helped including Brian and Joan King and of course Candy. The results are on the Men’s and Ladies tabs, and the 2’s Club took £125 with 11 2’s scored on the day paying out £11.35 each ….Geoff Brown
In the Hadrian League match at home against Hexham on Wednesday, 13th June, we had Matty Lamb on the first tee against Chris Bowman. You may ask so what? Well, Matty Lamb, an England international has just returned from North Carolina, the USA where he has been playing his golf on a scholarship and who currently plays off a handicap of +5. Well, the big man Chris went on to get 2 points in his back pocket winning 2 and 1. A great win. Then Ryan Clark came in with another 2 points with a great win. We went on to lose 8-4, but Hexham has a very strong team and is up there with the best, so 4 points is a great result. The rest of the lads battled on. Two went down at the 17th. I would like to thank Kenny Shepherd for covering for me on the night and looking after the Captain and Vice-Captain from Hexham until I arrived, and also thanks for the bar bill!!! Thanks to all those who played and came along to support.
On Tuesday, 20th June, we went away to Westerhope GC where we secured a 6-6 draw. I’d like to welcome Lee Thompson to the team; he’s been playing great at Parklands. Kev Miller was away working and Lee stepped in. There were good wins for Karl Mossom, Ryan Clark and Craig Wayman, 6 good points. Gav Jobe again came back from 5 down but lost on the 17th and we had great efforts from Lee and Davy who never gave up – cheers lads. And on a funny note, ask Ryan Clark about the runaway trolley on the 2nd hole.
On Wednesday, 28th June, we played Prudhoe at home and had a 7-5 win. Wet, wet, wet was the order of the evening and I’m not talking about the band. But the lads went out and played the best golf possible in the conditions. Lee got his first 2 points, but on that night all the players were winners. I would like to thank Granddad Brian Rutherford for acting as team Captain for the night.
On Saturday, 24th June our team of Karl Mossom, Dave Gibson and Gav Jobe represented Parklands in the County First Division Championships a 36 hole one-day competition where all 3 players scores count. Unfortunately, we fell one point short and were relegated to Division 2 for next season. It was a windy day at Gosforth and the lads gave their all so cheers guys.
My Captain’s Day is on Sunday, 6th August so get the day noted in your diary. It is a charity day to raise funds for ward 14 at the RVI. That’s the children’s oncology/cancer ward. I am looking for sponsors and donations and prizes for the raffle. There will be more details in a later post. It will be a great day for all.
Congratulations to Eammon Farrer who holed out on the 14th hole at Parklands on Sunday, 2nd July to record his first Hole in One. Eammon was representing the Parklands Inter Team, and his wonder (his words) 7 iron shot earned him 5 valuable points which were the deciding factor in the team winning the event by a single stableford point.
